. James May wrote the play based on his experiences as a young queer person in Sydney in the 1990s. ‘I came of age in Sydney in the 1990s and Hungry Ghosts was inspired by the colourful characters I met’ said James.
James now calls the Northern Rivers home and offered this play to Lismore Theatre Company. Junia Wulf is the Director and she has worked with James to bring his play to the stage. Another of James’ plays In the Ghetto was workshopped with Sharon Brodie at LTC last year and was chosen by Cracked Actors Theatre Melbourne as their Midsumma production.
This play, Hungry Ghosts is a journey into the ‘queer underground’ delving into the lives of people on the margins of society. ‘The play invokes themes of sexuality and torrid relationships along with addiction and destructive behaviours but it’s also a search for deeper meaning and spirituality,’ said James.
It features five speaking roles played by five experienced actors- Elyse Dallinger, Sarah-Jane Loxton, Krystle Winter, Crystal-Amber Bock and John McPherson
Director Junia Wulf is very pleased with the cast she has selected. ‘All five have embraced their characters with gusto,’ she said. ‘These seasoned performers will leave audiences with a greater understanding of why some people become addicted to substances. Hungry Ghosts is raw and edgy and will challenge some people. Others will relish its honesty.’
Hungry Ghosts is set to open on Friday 28 April for six shows over two weekends- Friday and Saturday nights at 7.30pm and Sunday afternoons at 2pm. Bookings are now open at trybooking.com/CGBBS or via the website Lismoretheatrecompany.org.au
